Fillings

Damaged Tooth? Consider Dental Fillings!

A dental filling is a method used to restore a tooth damaged by decay to its normal function and appearance. Fillings Palatine are often used to close spaces to prevent bacteria from entering and causing infections and further damage.

Which Type of Filling is Right for Me?

There are several factors to consider when determining the filling that each patient will need since every case is different. The factors which influence the kind of filling you might receive include allergies to specific materials, where the filling is required, and cost.

Difference Between Fillings

Here are some of the most common materials for fillings Palatine and some factors to consider:

Gold fillings – These are made to order and cemented into place. Gold inlays are tolerated by gum tissues and tend to be very durable with a lifespan of 20 years or more. Although considered by many experts to be the best material for fillings due to its durability and malleability, gold fillings are also the most expensive choice.

Amalgam (Silver) Fillings – These fillings are resistant to wear and relatively inexpensive; however, they are very noticeable due to their dark color, so they are not used on visible areas such as the front teeth.

*Please Note* This is an amalgam free practice. Because of the high mercury content (40-60% mercury versus about 5 % silver) we do not place amalgams in this office and take great care when removing old or preexisting amalgams by way of a special vacuum filter used when removing old amalgams to reduce the risk of swallowing contamination.

Composite (Plastic) Resins – Plastic resins can be colored to match the pigment of your teeth. Because they can chip and wear over time, they are not ideal for large fillings. They are also subject to staining from coffee or tobacco and do not last as long as other types of fillings (generally three to ten years).

Porcelain Fillings – Called inlays or onlays, these are produced as ordered from a laboratory and then bonded to the tooth. Porcelain fillings can match the color of the tooth and also resist staining, but their price is usually close to that of gold fillings.
